January/Febuary 2012

Not much new was going on in January. We both felt good getting back into the routine.
In February we made a visit to AZ. We helped Leah move into a new place. She is living closer to work in a cute updated one bedroom apartment.
The first grade waits for their turn to do a cheer

We did have a chance to visit Leah's 1st grade classroom at St. Agnes. The kids were so excited to see us. The had lots of question especially related to how old we were! They were having Catholic Schools week which ended with a special event. There was a cheer competiton with class doing their own cheer - 1st grade won for the lower grades! This was followed by a volleyball game of teachers vs. the 8th graders. The entire school was cheering for one side or another.
It was quite an event.
Leah tries to keep order during all the excitement.
The teachers ended up winning the volleyball game.

We stayed with Sean and Brenda Halpain (very nice hosts with a comfortable guest suite!) They also hosted there annual cook off - this year it was a salsa competition. None of the Schafers entered due to the move but we did enjoy the event. We tasted several spicy and mild versions, enjoying our favorites on a taco bar after the contest. It was also a nice time to catch up with friends.

The weekend of Feb 11 we spent Friday night in Augusta GA and in the morning Jim participated in the "Tough Mudder" event. It was held near the small town of Washington.

The start line, you had to climb a 6 foot wall to get there.
Pre race, all smiles and trying to stay warm

This was a 12 mile obstacle course with mud, fire, ice-water, 10,000 volts of electricity, 12 foot walls and underground mud tunnels.

By the time I took a picture, Jim was in the water
The weather was about 45degrees and very windy. Most challenges involved some kind of water - from getting sprayed, falling in or swimming through lakes or in a tank of ice water.

After the event, it's almost too cold to drink a beer!

He ended up with a pretty good ankle sprain, which he didn't feel too much until everything thawed out. They had barrels with fire stationed around so people could warm up. Jim had the car heat on full blast as I drove home and it took about the first hour to warm up.
Now he can say he's One Tough Mudder!
All I can say is I was cold watching and I'm never doing that!
